Wood Energy Technology Transfer Inc. (WETT Inc.) is a non-profit training and education association which promotes the safe and effective use of wood burning systems in Canada. WETT Inc. is responsible for issuing certificates of qualification. WETT trained professionals must abide by a code of ethics requiring professionalism in all aspects of their work. Their Web site (wettinc.ca) contains a lot of useful information. A home owner will need a WETT inspection to properly assess the condition of their wood burning appliance and chimney system. Frequently, if a home inspector suspects a fireplace and its chimney have not been maintained adequately he will recommend a WETT inspection. This same recommendation could be made if the home inspector suspects the installation does not conform to industry accepted standards. Yet another possible scenario is a request by an insurer for a WETT inspection prior to home insurance coverage. A WETT inspection costs approximately $200 and includes an estimate of the repair costs if required. A surcharge may apply if the inspection site is outside the normal coverage area.
